Podcast Episode #2: New Year's Resolutions You Can Actually Keep
For our second episode of the podcast we shared our tips and hacks for setting resolutions that you can keep and build on through the year. Also good news! Our Podcast is now available on Apple Podcasts so you can subscribe over there in your app for easier listening. You can still listen through BuzzSprout too if desired (our amazing hosting platform).
Here are our top 5 tips:
1) Start Small
Meg and I are both big fans for what we have lovingly deemed the 5 minute rule. Having trouble working out, commit to walking 5 minutes a day. Hate cleaning, set a timer for 5 minutes everyday to speed clean. This may sound silly, but the smaller commitment level makes us more likely to get these things done, and odds are we will spend more time than 5 minutes! You will be walking 30 minutes in no time with a slow build up to your goal time. Sometimes taking small steps towards a goal is better than nothing. Check out Tobi's tips which are basically my way of life now. Also check out this store, owned by Meg's friend Andria who uses the 5 minute cleaning method!
2) Saying NO
For us saying yes to any resolution also means there are a lot of things we must say no to. Prioritization is key and taking on new challenges without freeing up space in your head and schedule is like setting yourself up for failure! Do the hard word and get out a notepad, write down all the things you can STOP doing that will not get you closer to your goals. I really like doing a start, stop, continue list.
3) Select a Word of the Year
We learned from Tobi Fairley of the importance of selecting a word of the year as part of your new year's resolutions. I love how this simple act helps set intentions for the entire year. Last year my word of the year was Cultivate (which was incredibly helpful) and for the year 2020 my word is Bloom to build on what I cultivated in my life last year. This year is about getting out there and blossoming! Meg and I chose her word during our podcast (head over to Apple Podcasts to listen). Her word is BEE, but you really need to listen to the back story to understand both of our word selections! We highly recommend spending some time trying on different words of the year for size until one feels right. Then follow it with all your heart.
4) The Reward System
Sticker charts are not just for toddlers! Give yourself a star in your day planner every time you check a daily goal off the list. When I have been to the gym 10 times, I treat myself to a 60 minute deep tissue massage. Use your hard work as a way to celebrate and treat yourself with a special self-care treat of your choice (pedicures, eyelash extensions, whatever meets your fancy is a great reward).
5) Do Something Everyday that Gets Your Closer To Your Goals
Take action and do a little something everyday. Small accomplishments can add up to big wins!
6) Write it Down
We love the Day Designer day planner because it is beautiful, comprehensive and easy to use. This is my second year using this planer and my personal favorite is the blue block print pattern. It looks like that version is already sold out (mini one is still available!), we love the banana leaf print day planner equally, which is also still available at the time I am typing this! Day Designer Planner sell out quick so get yours today! I personally prefer the mini size as the large one is a bit much, but it does have tthe added benefit of ample space for notes!
We also love a digital solution to day planning to share calendars with loved ones and keep the hot mess of daily life in check. FamCal is one of our favorites.
