This is the very first, debut episode of Eastwest Birds Podcast! In this episode, we talk about eco gift wrapping, Christmas tree alternatives, and homemade gifts.

Christmas Tree Alternatives

Wall Decor Trees
Nothing against faux Christmas trees, but we feel there may be better options out there. Check out Oh Baby for the cutest wall decor in the shape of a Christmas tree. We love how this tree can be created as an art installation on the wall. Bonus, it can be used again year after year without having to feel the quilt of dragging a tree to the curb for the trash collector every year.

Potted Trees
Last year, Meg used a dwarf spruce (in a pot) as her Christmas tree. When the weather warmed up, she transferred the tree outdoors to live where it is still thriving!

I was so inspired by this, I decided to do the same thing this year and got a beautiful potted dwarf spruce for our Christmas Tree. Sadly, the corner we kept it in was too close to the radiator and the tree was not happy. We had to move her outside where she lights up our porch and greets all our guests. It is so nice to have an outdoor Christmas tree and we love that we can plant her later. We opted for a Christmas tree from a local tree farm instead. If you try getting a potted tree indoors, keep it in a cool place and check the water often!

Eco Gift Wrapping

Paper Bags
Most gift wrap is not possible to recycle! Instead, we love re-purposing leftover Whole Foods bags to wrap gifts. Visit me on instagram for how to instructions to transform your paper bags in beautiful gift wrap (like I did in the photo here). I also have a bow tying tutorial up on insta.

Santa Sacks
Santa sacks reduce a ton of wrapping paper waste and save you from cleaning up an ocean of wrapping Christmas day. I also love that they have a very authentic Christmas feel to them. I love the ones at Pottery Barn.

Eco Gifts!

DIY tassles are a fun gift idea Meg makes with so many versatile uses. These can me made in any color, take up almost no space and can be created using leftover crating supplies! We love using them on purses, door knobs, or even in earrings. You will be amazed how easy they are to create.

There are some great tutorials online and we hope to have our own video tutorial soon!

1. Homemade Cookies and Cards
We love a consumable gift because it is from the heart, unlike any other gift, and won't take up any space after it is eaten! I have two mouth watering cookie recipes (one that is pretty lazy and more time consuming). Simply wrap these cookies in parchment paper and tie with a ribbon. I like to give a card with the cookies too!

LAZY GOOEY COOKIES
These are the easiest cookies on the planet, take barely any time and always come out amazing. This recipe is from Lana at Crave (she is family and was nice enough to share the recipe). You can so easily add chocolate chips, nuts or other yummy fixings to this basic recipe.

1 bar organic cream cheese (softened)
1 stick organic unsalted butter (softened)
1 box of cake mix (any flavor) - preferably organic
1 egg

blend butter in electric mixer until smooth, then add cream cheese. Add egg. Slowly add in cake mix until batter comes together. Mix in chocolate chips if desired. Roll in powdered sugar or granulated sugar. Use small ice cream scoop with release to drop cookies on cookie sheet (2 inch apart) lined with parchment paper.

Bake at 350 for 10-13 min

2. Molasses Clove Cookies

I love the Molasses Clove Cookie Recipe from Suzanne Lombari (one of the founders of Dancing Deer!)
