On Monday, I hit up West Elm on my lunch break - hoping to snag a Martini Side Table during their 20% off sale. I ended up realizing the martini table is too short for my liking.

But, while I was there...I landed something even sweeter! They had a floor model West Elm Bliss Chair and a Half available. The perfect seat (I thought) for our playroom in progress - and I couldn't believe the price. Normally, the Bliss goes for $699.00, I got it for half! I'm smitten over this deal and cannot wait to paint the room now! An honorable mention goes to the super cute pillows I found on sale at Jonathan Adler. I love the unexpected/whimsical look of these small scale geometric pillows on such a large scale chair.

Gold bursts

There isn't much that pairs more nicely with a classic tufted headboard than a sunburst mirror right above the bed...and gold is your go-to for a glam look. Seriosky, ignore your husband and just go buy one...happy life, happy life. Why exactly do men hate gold so much?

Every playroom needs some chalk paint...I think. I love the idea of painting a portion of a wall with chalk board paint as a creative outlet for kids. Ikea sells he cutest chalk board easels that are also so awesome. Best of all, painting the surface of a play table with chalk board paint...well that is genius. Love it all.

My Really, Really Late Holiday Decor Post

I am so late to the party with this post - I almost considered not posting it at all. But, since who knows what our holiday decorations will look like next year - I figured it was worth sharing how our house looked in 2011 for Christmas. We went super subtle with teal and silver, gold and white...with a little animal print too (of course). I love the casual look, hopefully you do too.

Built-in Daybed Seating

I think built-ins are just about the best thing ever, and for our playroom I definitely have my heart set on some sort of daybed. Built-in seating absolutely makes me drool. Add storage drawers to the equation and well...that's when built-in seating crosses the line from just plain awesome to perfection (IMHO).

Smokin'

When I started trying to decide what paint color to use for our playroom, I wanted something a far cry from the bright yellow on the walls from the previous owners. After looking at nearly every pain color Benjamin Moore had to offer, I found myself loving two shades dearly...Smoke and Pale Smoke. Both work so well with the bright primary colors of Brendan's toys and have a nice cool gray undertone. Love that! Ultimately I'll probably end use using Smoke with accents of its neighboring color on the bm swatch, Iceberg..on the paneling inlays for interest.

Painted Paneling

I've been so addicted to Pinterest lately, I've been neglecting to blog as a result! After a few month long pinning binge, I'm back with ideas galore and my next project to tackle at home is the playroom. This room is unique, with paneling detail that I can't wait to paint. I'm thinking of painting the paneling 1 color, with the space in between a darker shade to add visual interest. What you don't see in this photo is the cut on Brendan's forehead from falling using his walker (photoshop took care of that). Okay, I'm a slacker when it comes to blogging now - between changing diapers and trying to teach my child to crawl, speak and thrive - there are literally not enough hours in the day (I know it sound cliche, but it's true!)

When I get 5 seconds in daylight, on a weekend - I promise to post pics of our finished living room. I've been struggling with what to call the style - and loosely I would call it Classic Glam (with a beachy twist). I'm sure most of you already started following her blog after seeing the amazing DIY Hemp Pendant project last month, but for those you don't already - Solana's blog is always a great read!

Read on to learn how Solana turned a throw-away table into an adorable step stool for her Chihuhua, Miguel.

"It's Solana here from Solo Thais bringing you another "do it yourself" project. This time around I used materials I had on-hand, which resulted in a very economical project!"

Sometimes you just have to look past the ugly...like this table for instance. This was in the throw-away pile at my grandpa's and I decided to save it from the dumpster. The legs were loose and spindle rails are ~~never~~ rarely flattering {sorry Gramps}. Five years ago I took this table into my arms and decided to give it a new life. I plucked the spindle rails off the top and filled the holes with wood filler, tightened the legs, sanded it down and painted it a pale green. This was not a huge transformation, but for the next few years it served as a plant stand and then extra storage in my small apartment bathroom.

As I was preparing to move into our new home this summer, I decided I had enough of this table. The top was starting to warp from being in a non-ventilated bathroom, but as usual I couldn't just throw it out...plus it was my grandpa's and I wanted to try to do something else with it. As I took it apart I realized the top section would be a perfect little step stool for Miguel. Even though my bed is only 18" off the floor, for some reason he won't jump up on his own. So the plan was on! Here is how it came together...

After disassembling the table, I put part of it back together to create a small stool.

I wanted to add a cushion and fabric to the stool so I cut out a piece of foam from an old egg-carton mattress.

I found the fabric I wanted to use and upholstered the top of the stool.

I spray painted the legs and added furniture pads to the bottom to protect the hardwood floors.

The result is this adorable little step stool for my adorable little dog. Miguel is very happy to be so independent now!

As for the rest of the table parts, I attempted to put them back together, but it wasn't worth the parts and pieces I would need to buy to make it sturdy again. The overall cost of this transformation was $0.00 since I had everything on hand. I almost used the stuffing from an old pillow and I could have used a t-shirt with an interesting graphic on the front. Before running out to the store it's always a good idea to look around the house to see what might make an interesting piece for your home.

My new desk chair arrived in the mail - and I am obsessed! Even though I was nervous about the color, the Nimes tufted dining chair from Overstock ended up being a beautiful soft gray in real life - thankfully nothing like the washed out putty tone in the image online (I trusted the comments of others who said it was really a dove gray and I'm glad I went for it)! The tufting and nail head detail are so pretty - overall the chair is really romantic, sophisticated + girly...insanely gorgeous. I can't wait to assemble my imitation parsons desk + set up my little girl corner:) I'll be sure to post progress on my office nook soon!

Quatrefoil Mirror Project?

And...painting is done!

After having painted the area surrounding the mantle (not white)....the gold mirror I had purchased for $27.00 at Home Goods suddenly made everything look too warm. So, today I returned it and headed to Lowe's for a cheap Quatrefoil mirror (based on the suggestion from Sherry at Young House Love). It's only $64.97 and looks like one you'd get for at least double that price elsewhere.

I sort of appreciate the look of the espresso mirror...but I have other plans in mind.

I totally plan on painting it a glossy white instead, something like what what Kate (via Centsational Girl) did above her mantle.

I am also considering no mirror as an option. I know - I am so fickle! But seriously I'm still in love with the gray For Like Ever poster and might need to put that above the mantle instead (like what Jessie Randall did).

Fireplace Progress

So far my friends, I have done away with the yellow walls (opting instead for the softest gray known to man - Benjamin Moore OC-14 Soft Chamois)! I am already loving the results and this weekend I'm tackling the fireplace. My plan is to paint the surrounding paneling the wall color (Soft Chamois) and the fireplace mantel and woodwork a bright white semi-gloss.

West Elm Parsons Desk Look-Alike

Like all of you, I have coveted with the West Elm Parsons Desk, dreaming of the day it would be mine. But at $299 + $35 for shipping for a grand total of $334.00 - I could never justify the cost. Then, last night during a Google search, I made an astonishing discovery. Overstock has a white desk with the exact same proportion & style...even a drawer in the same place! And, the best part - the Overstock version is only $135.99 + $1.00 shipping (that's $136.99)! The reviews do say that the Overstock version is more of a paint finish - not lacquered shiny white, but I figure if I really miss that sheen - I can set aside an afternoon and get the look for a few dollars with a couple cans of Rust-Oleum 1904-830 11 OZ Gloss White Lacquer Spray Paint.

This morning I went for it and added the overstock version to my cart after I received a 7% off coupon in the mail. The total damage for the desk was only $127.47!

So, what's the verdict? Can you spot the difference between the two?

Worth a savings of over $206?

Beige Bedrooms

My bedroom REALLY wants to be beige, but for weeks I've been toying around with gray paint colors - well frankly because that seems cooler, more modern...more hip. But, fact remains I still really feel beige.

Living Room Inspiration

So, it happening!!

By it - I mean we are painting the living room finally! As a reminder, this is how it looks today.

Our plan of attack is to paint the fireplace white, paint the walls Benjamin Moore Gray Mist and re-paint all the trim a brilliant white (Olympic Zero VOC Off the Shelf White Semi-Gloss).

But - there are still decisions to be made. Like, what color will we paint the inside of the built in bookcases and china cabinets? This decision is what is tripping me up at this point.

Part of me wants to go for impact, something a la Young House Love (see their awesome built ins below). If I go bold, I am really loving Benjamin Moore AF-565 (Mysterious). But, I am also considering a warm gray with slightly more oomph than the wall color, something like Benjamin Moore 1535 - Seattle Mist.

For the finished room palette I'm taking my inspiration from the Hotel Yountville in Napa Valley. How pretty is this room?

I think adding a pop of navy blue could take this palette of taupe, camel and coral to the next level.

I really can't believe I've lived 40 minutes from Newburyport for 3 years - and have never visited until now. Gosh what a beautiful place! I stumbled across this adorable boutique Helene M. that was decorated to the nines. It's also Northshore wine week and we had some fantastic wine at Ceia Kitchen + Bar along with some pretty amazing soft shell crab with cilantro....to die for. We would have definitely stayed longer - but decided to head back home just in time before the torrential downpour started! We plan on heading back for another visit soon.

Magnolia's Banana Pudding

If you haven't tried this recipe - you are missing out big time! Magnolia's Banana Pudding is one of the cheapest/most amazing deserts ever. I like to arrange mine in a trifle bowl - but you can also prepare it this way.

If you're going to make this recipe, be sure to invite friends over because it only lasts a couple days and having to throw away any on the third day is a tragedy. Enjoy!

Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding
From 'More From Magnolia'

Serves 12

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups water
2/3 cup vanilla pudding mix
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
3 cups cold heavy cream
1 (12 ounce) box vanilla wafers
4 ripe bananas, sliced

Directions
Whisk together the water, pudding mix and sweetened condensed milk until will mixed. If not using instant, refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight. If using instant, it will be ready to go within 15 min.

When pudding is ready, whip the heavy cream in a chilled bowl until soft peaks form. Fold the pudding mixture into the whipped cream until well incorporated.

In a deep glass bowl (or pie pans or whatever you want to use to layer...but honestly the deeper the bowl the more it will all 'mish mash' together), layer the pudding, wafers, bananas and pudding again. Continue until all the mixture is used up, ending with either wafers or pudding.

Refrigerate for 4 hours or so...then serve!

Marilyn's Dress or Pale Oak? That is the question.

I am so getting there!! With selecting a paint color that is.

After 2 years of extensive deliberation on which paint color to chose for our living room....I have narrowed it down to two Benjamin Moore paint colors (Marilyn's Dress and Pale Oak). As you know the room has a lot of honey, gold and white tones...so I wanted a grayer wall color to balance things out. Now the questions is, how gray should I go? I'd love you opinion if you have one. Keeping the room yellow...well that isn't an option:)

Hi everyone! My name is Solana and I am the creator of the design blog Solo Thais. I started Solo Thais a year ago as a way to catalog the things that inspire me throughout my day. I've been experimenting with DIY projects lately and Erin, of the beautiful blog Graceful Whimsy, has invited me to share some of these projects with you. So here is my latest project, the Hemp Pendant Light, and process on how it all came together!

In April I blogged about DIY pendant light ideas and decided to try one out myself. I chose the Hemp Pendant lights seen on Crafty Nest, and inspired by West Elms Woven Abaca lamps. I followed Heika DeHart's step-by-step instructions and the results were amazing!

What you'll need: Deflate-able ball from Target ($3), two bottles of clear tacky glue (about $3 each), a spool of hemp string (under $5) and a hanging light cord ($15)

After drawing a circle on the bottom of the ball, I began running the string through the glue and wrapping it around the ball in random patterns avoiding the circle {this is for the opening at the bottom}. The glue quickly covered my hands and started to dry, so I dumped the glue into a container and diluted it with water which made it easier to spread over the string. After using the entire spool of string I let it sit for 3 days to allow all of the layers to dry.

When the glue dried completely, it was time to deflate and removed the ball. I filled it back up with air for the next one {or to bring to the beach}.

Because I watered down the glue, some of the glue spread between the string and dried into small, clear flakes which I had to scrape off.

I had some great suggestions by friends as to what type of bulb I should use. Almost everyone suggested an old-style filament bulb, so I compromised and got a clear round one from Home Depot, and as a backup in case this one became too hot, I grabbed some round compact florescents. So far, my clear bulb seems to be doing just fine.

My new kitchen light!!!

I love what this light has added to our small kitchen, and I like how it compliments my birch tree painting. The shadows on the wall look like tree branches extending from the branches in the painting and the hemp adds a natural and rustic element to the room.

Shades of Griege

When it comes to paint colors, I usually prefer colors you can't put your finger on. I painted our sunroom BM Crystalline - it's across between blue, green & gray. So for the living room, I'm thinking of painting something a little more meaty than beige....across between gray and beige...Griege! The room is West facing so I need to be careful - with windows only on one wall (which happens to be the west facing wall) - this room could get too dark and cave like easily. Not much makes me happier than traveling and I've always wanted a really awesome world map. I dream of going back to Spain and Paris for a third time...I really can't get enough. I secretly wished Paris was my home for years - until an episode of House Hunters on HGTV ruined by dream. Can you believe a 300 square foot apartment goes for over $500,000 there!

Have I mentioned I love Overstock? Well...I do. I have several rugs from Overstock - since I refuse to pay over $150.00 for a rug this is the almost the only way to go (besides Target which is another great source). I have been really wanting a storage bench or daybed/chaise/settee for my living room and haven't been able to find one in my price range. So, I check Overstock and found these great options. I have scoured the internet and have found nothing that compares price-wise to these. Now I just have to decide which of these benches really should belong to me.

Drum Pendant for Less?

I'm not a fan of the contemporary chandelier in my dining room...a little gift that keeps on giving from the previous owners of my house.

I have been hunting for a drum pendant chandelier with a swap chain since I would have to do some heavy electrical work to center a typical drum pendant over my table. A drum pendant on a chain is hard to come by - but I managed to find a few!

I found this beige drum pendant chandelier on Overstock for only $84.99.

It reminds me a lot of this Jonathan Adler Meurice Pendant that costs over 4 times as much at $430.10!

So, I'm thinking I should go for it and buy the cheaper fixture from Overstock - some of the reviews say the quality isn't great - but for a fraction of the cost of the Adler chandelier - I think I should go for it. I mean...who wants to spend almost $500.00 for a chandelier? Not me.

Today is my birthday! I'm 31 years young.

I lucked out this year - I get to spend today with my lovely 2 month old baby boy (Brendan) and the weather is seriously the best it has been all spring thus far. I can't believe I only have 1 week left before heading back to the office daily grind.

I'm glad my little nugget also has a spring birthday like this mom. Spring is a time of renewal, beauty and a chance to finally get outdoors again after winter. So much to be happy for! Being on maternity leave this spring has been one of the most amazing experiences.

I am in desperate need of furniture to create a focal point in our living room - drawing attention to our fireplace. I put together a couple mood boards to help me decide with 2 different rug options. Here is my thought process - I want to draw attention to our built in bookcases.The previous owners covered them up with an over-sized loveseat and it really distracted from the character of the built ins. Instead, I am thinking a console table flanked by two cream colored leather chairs would look great. That way the chairs can be brought out in front and at an angle, exposing the bookcases. This console will fit perfectly between the bookcases.

These rugs are both fabulous - I just can't decide which I love more. I'd love to hear thoughts from my designer friends! Let me know your vote:)

Re-thinking Space

For 2 years now, our Pottery Barn Square sofa has been facing the fireplace. This was nice in winter, but really I hate looking at the fireplace (yes I still have not painted the knotty pine white yet, that is on the to do list). So, when I had my recent baby shower to celebrate Brendan - I decided to move the sofa to the windows to make it earlier for guests to mull about. This was an instant improvement, but I have spent months trying to figure out how to add extra seating without making this corner crowded. Then, yesterday after watching HGTV all day, I had an epiphany! I moved the Dolce Chair from Target in front of the french doors (we never close the doors - so I felt comfortable blocking them). Next I brought the Crate and Barrel leaning shelf downstairs to flank to other side of the sofa. This corner of our living room is so much more welcoming and put together now - I couldn't be happier! Well, I could be happier if one morning I woke up to a magically painted fireplace...but you get the point:)

Brendan Matthew Walsh was born on April 4, 2001 - weighing 7 lbs 14 oz.

He is a joy and a lot of work of course...I am getting better at changing diapers and dealing with the lack of sleep with each day:) Hopefully soon burping and nursing will be second nature...but for now being a mom is something I am learning to do. I just got my new 50mm 1.4 lens...sadly two days after my baby shower so I didn't get to capture the actual day with the camera. But that's okay because I'm still learning to use this lens! Here are some of the best shots I got of some of my baby shower decor in the days after the actual event. You'll notice many decorative elements are taken directly from the baby shower inspiration board I designed to help me plan the big day.

Some of the special elements of the shower included pineapple cupcakes, banana whoopie pies, rock candy, Izze soda, tissue pom poms, pinwheels and tulips.

As I've been planning for my upcoming baby shower, I've become fascinated by pinwheels and milk glass. There is something magical about this combination...so fun, bright and happy. I was able to pick up a starters collection of milk glass at my local consignment store for 8 bucks (that's a fraction of the cost of similar pieces I found on Etsy for sale).

The most absolutely gorgeous pinwheels I've been able to find are from ElizabethSt. I went with her Anna Griffin blue and green collection that is perfect with the color scheme for my shower.

Ever since I first saw this chair on Young House Love, I have been in love. It is super afforable - but at $159.99 I wasn't ready to shell out the dough for the past several months. This week I noticed the Dolce Chair is on sale for 119.99! And, what's even better - free shipping too! That's almost a $70.00 savings when you factor in the $25.00 it usually costs to ship this chair.

I hastily added it to my cart and it will be mine within a week. So excited to add this chair to my living room in place of the one I just sold on Craig's list for $100.00. So, buying the Dolce chair I just about broke even. Awesome right?

De-Junking: Saying Goodbye to Catalog Clutter

Today, I decided - I had had enough. I have stacks and stacks of magazines and catalogs all over the house. Granted, they are well contained in a variety of magazine baskets...but my nesting instinct is starting to kick in and enough is enough!

So, here's what I did:

1. Emailed all the companies who send me catalogs and told them to stop.

2. Went to the websites of the brands I really love and subscribed to their email lists instead.

3. Lastly, I joined the Facebook and Twitter pages for the brands I want to keep at top of mind.

There are definitely brands that I will miss receiving catalogs from (Ballard Designs, Wisteria, Grandin Road, Smith & Noble, At West End, Serena & Lily, Viva Terra, Home Decorators, )...but am keeping in touch electronically.

Actually 1 confession to make - I have not unsubscribed from Pottery Barn's Catalog! That will be my one catalog indulgence:)

I think I mentioned how bored I am with the striped cushions on my sofa. But, I still haven't buckled down to purchase new pillow covers for that refresh I talked about in an earlier post. And, right now I'm not sure I want to change the color palette completely in this room. So, I comped up some visuals to help sway my pillow purchasing decision. So the question is, how many new pillows do I really need to make an impact (5,3 or 2)?

I fell in love with this color combo today - when a colleague at work showed me her new day planner - with a beautiful patterned cover in these colors. This combo is sort of unexpected, yet amazing! I love the idea if tempering terracotta, plum and aqua with a little taupe and cream. I was already planning taupe, terracotta and brown for my living room refresh...so I might just need to add a little plum and aqua too!

Holiday eCard - Going Paperless

I'm the first to admit that getting a bunch of Holiday cards in the mail is fun...but for us we've done eCards two years in a row. Not that cards are super expensive - but we just find the waste of paper to be a little much sometimes. And, the best part about Ecards is that they are free! We're also able to send the card to many more people this way (our email list of close friends and family is 107...that's more than most people can afford to send paper cards to).

I love Pingg for their lovely range of templates and customization capabilities.

Here's the card we sent this year...with Ollie by our tree wearing his festive little doggie sweater. Really, he likes being dressed up I swear!

Christmas at Home

Christmas dinner was at our house this year, which for us was the largest dinner party we've had since we moved into our home. We've had friends over in small groups, but this was our very first time filling our 8 person dining table.

The colors we used for our place settings were inspired from those already existing in the room (red, gold and ivory), since our living/dining area combined this was the easiest way to prevent things from looking chaotic. The look was simple:

- Hurricane vases with white candles and small ornament filler
- Red place mats and napkins from Pottery Barn
- Gold Ruffled Chargers from Crate and Barrel
- Fresh Flowers (these came from my company party...I got to take home the centerpiece which saved me some serious dough)

The result was classic and not too fussy looking. We decided to go without table linens and let the natural wood shine through with the other red and gold touches.

A Baby on the Way

Despite being a total wedding fanatic...I have recently switched gears only slightly as I focus my efforts on something else...that being my growing bump! Yes that's right I'm 21 weeks pregnant and expecting a baby boy in April. So, I decided it was time to start another blog, this one devoted solely to baby. I'm talking about the best nursery decor, maternity clothing, awesome baby gear...I'll be talking about it all.

Trench Coats are all the Rage...for Dogs

This amazing doggie trench coat just showed up on my Etsy homepage and I figured everyone just needs to see this. I mean, even my husband just said "aaaawww" when he saw this photo. So cute I just might need one (I mean Ollie needs one).

The artist is RoverDog and there are so many cute things in her shop. In a world full of puppies in tutus with pink studded colors, her shop is a breath of fresh air. Every item in her shop is tailored and classic - kind of like J. Crew for dogs. Love it love it.

Amy and Jon's Wedding

I've been looking forward to Amy's wedding for a while. I mean...how often do you get to attend a graphic designer's wedding...guaranteed to be swoon worthy right? Amy chose purple, green and dove gray as her wedding colors and she married these three shades together just beautifully. Often dove gray and purple can be very traditional...but adding a fresh pop of green does something really magical.

Amy's centerpieces were a work of art. She literally dreamed up the creation of these sculpturally beautiful pieces of art! Simply amazing. She included bleached branches, rocks, peas, and dahlias in a glass hurricane for a really unique and unexpected look. Mason jars hung from branches adding a warm touch of light throughout the night. Just lovely.

Holiday Style with a Coastal Twist

Those of you who know me well...know I appreciate fall - but it's really not my thing. Dark colors, cold weather, and mums are just not my favorite. So, when I opened a Wisteria catalog today when I got home...I was giddy over their Coastal Christmas collection. Yes, yes yes! Just what I needed to spark my enthusiasm for the holidays. Sand dollar ornaments, coral tree skirt, star fish stockings!! Sorry I just can't contain my excitement and hopefully you appreciate this new development as much as I do. How refreshing.
